Sulfur hexafluoride is a commonly used insulator in electricity transmission and distribution equipment. Because of its high global warming potential (GWP), CARB adopted the Regulation for Reducing Sulfur Hexafluoride Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear in 2010. As new technologies using lower or zero GWP insulators emerge, CARB staff are proposing to amend the current regulation to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to increase flexibility in complying with the standards.
